I PLANTED MY GARDEN A LONG TIME
AGO
TILLED THE SOIL, AND SEPARATED
THE ROCKS,
(TALKING LONG HOURS OF HARD LABOUR)
THE HOT SUN ON MY BACK
CAUSED SWEATS LIKE RAINDROPS TO
FALL FROM MY FACE.
MY CHOICEST PLANTS AND SEEDS ALL
STRATIGICALLY PLACED.
EACH BED MARKED AND SEPARTED,
THE TRELACES HANDMADE.
IT WAS PERFECT.
I WATERED MY GARDEN THREE TIMES
PER WEEK.
SUNLIGHT WAS ADEQUATE, THE NIGHT
BROUGHT SHADE.
I WAITED PATIENTLY BUT ANXIOUSLY
FOR THE FIRST FEW DAYS,
IT WAS A LONG WAIT, IT TOOK ABOUT
THREE WEEKS,
THEN I GASPED, O MY GOSH! THINGS
STARTED TO GROW.
VINES, BUDS, EVEN LITTLE TREES
WERE COMING UP EVERYWHERE.
I WAS DELIGHTED. MY GARDEN WAS
INDEED PERFECT.
THEN, “WHAT’S THAT?”
THOSE PERFECT LITTLE TREES, WERE
ACTUALLY WEEDS.
THEY WERE COMING UP SO FAST, THEY
JUST SPREAD.
I TRIED TO STOP THEM, BUT THEN
I GAVE UP.
THEY WERE NO LONGER LITTLE, THEY
WERE GIANTS.
I TOOK WHATEVER I COULD FROM AMIDST
THE WEEDS,
A FLEX OF WHEAT THAT I COULD KNEED.
I LOOKED AT MY GARDEN IN DISMAY.
I WONDERED, WOULD IT HELP IF I
JUST PRAY?
WHAT IF THOSE WEEDS COULD JUST
GO AWAY?
I CLOSED MY EYES FOR WHAT SEEM
LIKE ETENITY
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS JUST FOR A FEW
SECONDS
SLOWLY, I OPENED. WHAT WAS I EXPECTING?
A MIRACLE MAYBE! THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN
HESITANTLY, I CROUCHED AND WIPE
MY BLEARY EYES
THEN I JUST STARTED PULLING THEM
ONE BY ONE.
NOW I GAZED UPON MY GARDEN WITH
DELIGHT.
THOSE BIG GIANT WEEDS ARE NOWHERE
INSIGHT
THE SEEDS ARE NOW PROSPEROUS
THE VINES ARE YEILDING FRUITS
IT IS JUST BEAUTIFUL
MY GARDEN IS FREGUENTLY VISITED
BUT NOT BY THOSE GRUESOME WEEDS
EACH TIME THEY SHOW THEIR THORNY
LITTLE HEADS
I JUST QUICKLY PLUCK THEM DEAD
THE LADYBUGS AND THE BUMBLE BEE
BUTTERFLY FLYING GLEEFULLY
ALL FIND IT A JOY TO VISIT ME
EACH TIME I REAP FROM MY GARDEN
THE BOUNTY OF THE EARTH
I SMILE AND SAID
“THANK GOD I DIDN’T QUIT.
